The bedside check is the Stemmer sign: try to pinch and lift a fold of skin at the base of your second toe. If you cannot gather a fold, that is a positive Stemmer sign and it points strongly to lymphedema. A negative result does not rule it out, since early lymphedema can still pinch normally.
Lipedema rounds out the group and gets mistaken for both.
